What the SAN value is

SAN — 理智值, the sanity value — is the game's signature survival attribute, lifted directly from the novel's Beyonder cosmology. It measures how stable your mind stays in a world full of spiritual pollution. Your SAN bar runs 0-100 and is shown live just below your health bar.

Unlike a traditional MMO, Lord of Mysteries punishes what you witness, not just what you fight. Gazing at high-ranking existences, lingering in polluted zones, or even typing a deity's honorific name in chat can all strip SAN. Manage it like a second health bar — or lose your character to madness.

How you lose SAN

The main drains, worst first, as reported across CN community guides:

Witnessing the unnameable

Directly seeing a high-ranking existence or otherworldly entity is the sharpest single hit — reports range from 20 to 40 SAN at once. *

Polluted zones

Deep crypts, abandoned asylums, and defiled ritual sites drain SAN slowly and continuously while you stand inside. *

Mental attacks

Being hit by spirit-typed skills strips SAN; the amount scales with the skill's rank. *

Undigested potions & foreign artifacts

Drinking an incompletely digested potion, or touching an artifact that clashes with your pathway, drops SAN according to the mismatch. *

Forbidden knowledge

Reading cursed texts and ancient taboo writings drains SAN in proportion to the content's rank and corruption. *

Stages of the descent

SAN loss is staged, not a flat debuff. The community describes four bands; the exact thresholds are not confirmed in-game and stay marked 待核验:

  1. 01

    Mild

The screen edges smear with a subtle visual distortion. No gameplay penalty yet — treat it as the early warning.

  2. 02

    Moderate

Random hallucinations begin: shadows crawl, and the game whispers voices that are not there.

  3. 03

    Severe

Your character becomes mentally unstable — skill casts can misfire and NPC dialogue may offer delusional options.

  4. 04

    Extreme

Brief loss of control: your character attacks everything nearby, allies included, for a short window, then regains partial SAN once the episode ends.

Loss of control

At zero SAN the character tips into 失控 — loss of control. In the novel this is usually the end of a Beyonder; in-game the reported mild form is a temporary episode where you attack all targets, including teammates, before recovering some SAN.

* Media coverage adds that extreme neglect can go further — a permanently corrupted, monster-like state, possibly costing the character for good (some outlets say the character is deleted). The exact threshold and conditions are unconfirmed, so treat deep SAN loss as a serious risk, not a curiosity.

Recovering SAN

Every recovery channel reported by the community, from fast-and-itemed to slow-and-free:

  1. 01

    Sedatives (镇定剂)

The fastest fix. Bought from the quartermaster at the Night Hawk outpost or dropped in dungeons; restores SAN instantly mid-combat but carries a cooldown. *

  2. 02

    Holy water (圣水)

Stronger than sedatives but harder to obtain — crafted specifically by the Bard (Sun) pathway. *

  3. 03

    Rest in safe zones

Churches, the Night Hawk headquarters, and the Seer club are neutral safe areas where SAN regenerates continuously — far faster than in the field. *

  4. 04

    Purification ritual (净化仪式)

At very low SAN, run the full ritual in a safe area with candles, holy salt, and purification runes to restore SAN to full and clear all mental-pollution debuffs. *

  5. 05

    Advance your sequence

Digesting your potion and promoting clears the mad whispers and restores a large chunk of SAN — progression is itself recovery. *

Passive defense

Slowing the drain matters as much as refilling the bar. Reported passive safeguards:

SAN-resistance gear

Some equipment affixes reduce the rate of SAN loss. *

Join a Beyonder organization

Joining the Night Hawks (值夜者) grants a baseline mental-resistance passive. *

Stand near a Bard

Bard (Sun) players project a group purification aura that slows SAN decay for allies in range. *

Lucky charms

A lucky-charm accessory reportedly adds a small, steady SAN-resistance bonus. *

Common mistakes

The habits that get first-week players killed, per CN community warnings:

  1. 01

    Treating SAN as optional

You can out-level a fight and still collapse mentally. Route your exploration around safe zones, not just your combat power.

  2. 02

    No recovery kit

Running out with no sedatives and no ritual materials is how a short trip becomes a death clip. Stock up before you go.

  3. 03

    Ignoring the early warnings

By the time hallucinations start, you are two stages deep. Retreat at the first visual distortion.

  4. 04

    Typing the forbidden

Even chat is dangerous — speaking a deity's honorific name can trigger mental damage. Roleplay the caution.

FAQ

Q1.What does SAN mean in Lord of Mysteries?
SAN is 理智值, the sanity value — a 0-100 survival stat shown below your health bar. It tracks your character's mental stability; when it bottoms out, you lose control.
Q2.How do I restore SAN fast?
Use a sedative for an instant mid-combat top-up, or stand in a safe zone (church, Night Hawk HQ, Seer club) for free regeneration. At very low SAN, a purification ritual in a safe area refills and clears pollution debuffs.
Q3.Does hitting 0 SAN delete my character?
The confirmed reported effect is a brief loss-of-control episode where you attack everyone, then recover some SAN. Media claims a deeper, possibly permanent corrupted state exists, but the exact condition is unverified — treat it as a serious risk.
Q4.Can I be immune to SAN loss?
Not immune, but you can slow it: SAN-resistance gear affixes, joining the Night Hawks, standing near a Bard's purification aura, and lucky-charm accessories all help.
Q5.Do pathways affect SAN?
Yes in reported ways — Bard (Sun) players craft holy water and project a group aura, and advancing any sequence clears whispers and restores SAN. Pathway-incompatible artifacts drain more.
Q6.Which zones drop SAN the most?
High-pollution areas — deep crypts, abandoned asylums, and defiled ritual sites — drain SAN continuously. Witnessing an unnameable entity is the single biggest one-off hit.

SAN is the third launch system. The companion-cultivation (marionettes) file and the Fate Council faction file sit next to it in the archive.
